IN-BE-Tweens: Navigating New Technologies With Your 4th or 5th Grade Child

The 4th and 5th grade years have become known as the 'TWEEN years:  a time of transition where child and family must make room for both the still-little-kid and the burgeoning adolescent.

Unlike the experience of their parents, today the ‘tween years are entangled with a networked world of video games, the Internet and social-media.   The powerful combination of being a ‘tween and coming of age in a digital culture create new opportunities and challenges for families.

In this workshop, we will look at raising a ‘tween in the 21st century.  We will move beyond the stereotype that adults should fear the ‘tween years.  We will make room for supporting you and your child to more comfortably be IN-BE-tween in an always-on world.

This workshop is an opportunity to:

  • Understand the powerful draw of new media and technology for 4th and 5th grade children.

  • Learn how to tap into the your child’s enthusiasm and yet remain in a monitoring role

  • Define your family’s values when it comes to technology

  • Figure out how much screen time is “right” for your child and your family life

  • Discuss smart limits around games and sites with inappropriate content

  • Understand when and how to introduce new technology into your child’s life

  • Learn to support your children in knowing what to do if inappropriate online activity comes their way.

  • Help your child to build a sense of good judgment when it comes to online manners and ethics.
